UBTZ Signals Possible End to Transit Container Tariff Discounts

Published: 2026-03-22

UBTZ has announced that it may fully cancel tariff discounts for transit container transportation through Mongolia if economic calculations justify the move. The railway’s General Committee had already revised the discount structure on October 22, 2025, changing incentives previously tied to shipment volume. The latest notice suggests the policy is still under review and could be tightened further in the near term. For shippers using Mongolia as a transit corridor, the decision raises the prospect of higher logistics costs and less predictable pricing on a route that is important for regional cargo flows. The move also indicates that UBTZ is willing to adjust commercial terms more aggressively in response to revenue and cost considerations.

World Water Day Highlights Equity Gaps and New Groundwater Storage Efforts in Southern Mongolia

Mongolia marked World Water Day under the theme “Water and Equality,” underscoring unequal access to clean water, sanitation and resource management at both household and regional levels. Water Agency chief Z. The government has observed the day since 2005 as part of UN-backed efforts to promote sustainable water management. In the Gobi, Omnogovi province is expanding reservoirs and ponds under its Gobi-Water program, while local authorities and mining operators are promoting water reuse and conservation. Oyu Tolgoi says it has kept water reuse above 80% for more than a decade and plans a new project to prevent evaporation and store water underground, reflecting growing pressure to secure scarce groundwater supplies.
