Petition to Reverse Vehicle and Road Fee Hikes Gains 948 Signatures; Parliamentary Review at 33,000

Published: 2026-06-21

A citizen-led e-petition calling to annul recent increases in vehicle tax and road usage fees has gathered 948 signatures on the State Great Khural’s public petitions platform. Initiated by E. Bayasaltsengel, the filing argues the hikes—effective from 1 January 2025—are unlawful and inequitable, citing average vehicle tax rises of about 300% and road fees up to 500% without visible improvements in road quality, maintenance, or signage. The petition also requests refunds of the difference collected under the higher rates. Public input will be accepted until the 27th of this month. Should the petition reach the legal threshold of 33,000 supporters, parliament will form a working group to study the issue, potentially opening a formal review of transport-related levies and their alignment with service delivery and budget implications.

Petition Pushes Overhaul of Alcohol Control Law with Stricter Licensing and Outlet Limits

Published: 2026-06-21

A public petition is seeking urgent revisions to Mongolia’s 2015 Law on Combating Alcohol Abuse, arguing current measures have been outpaced by rising health and social harms. The petition cites men’s life expectancy at 67 and claims around 90% of crimes and domestic violence are alcohol-related. It proposes tougher, state-led regulation of retail licensing—shifting decision-making from local administrations—and differentiated controls based on alcohol strength. The petition highlights outlet density as a key driver of harm, noting an estimated one alcohol point per 270 people in Mongolia versus 4,000–8,000 per outlet under strict state oversight in Scandinavian countries (about 10,000 per outlet in Sweden). Signature collection began on June 3 via the parliament’s petition portal. Lawmakers will consider the revisions if the petition reaches 100,000 signatures; 317 had signed as of publication, with 12 days remaining.
