Transport Minister Orders Site Secured, Halts Mining Across Dornogovi After 13-Year-Old’s Death

Published: 2026-05-31

A 13-year-old boy died on May 24 in Urgun district, Dornogovi Province, after a landfill embankment collapsed. Visiting the site on May 31, Transport Minister B. Delgersaikhan ordered the company holding the local license to immediately backfill the hole and secure the area the same day. He also directed local authorities to compel the firm to cover funeral and related expenses and provide legal counsel to the family. In response to the incident, mining extraction and use across Dornogovi has been suspended until companies complete land rehabilitation on areas left unrestored and rectify all violations. The move signals stricter safety and reclamation enforcement in Mongolia’s mining regions, with potential short-term disruptions to local operations and logistics while compliance checks and remediation proceed.

Ulaanbaatar city authorities will open traffic on a new 680-meter connector running north of DEMA Hospital and looping under Narnii Bridge to Narnii Khoroolol on June 1. The project, located between Bayangol District’s 24th and 26th khoroos, aims to share traffic loads currently concentrated at the Altai residential complex and Narnii Bridge. The first 350 meters were built in 2024, with the remaining 330 meters completed this year. Once operational, the road will enable direct access from Narnii Khoroolol to Altai and help ease congestion at the junction leading south from Altai to Chinggis Avenue. Mayor B. Purevdagva instructed officials to finish lighting and landscaping by June 15, signaling continued incremental measures to relieve Ulaanbaatar’s chronic congestion through localized link-road upgrades.

Ulaanbaatar authorities will close the west-side road of Sukhbaatar Square from Baruun Dorvon Zam between 20:00 and 23:00 on May 31 to accommodate a ceremonial lantern parade from Sukhbaatar Square to Gandantegchinlen Monastery. The parade is scheduled to start at 20:30, following a full day of Buddha’s Day activities that begin at 04:00, with major ceremonies at 07:00 and 09:30. Relics of Buddha’s Two Chief Disciples on Public Display in Ulaanbaatar Through June 9

Published: 2026-05-31

Relics associated with Buddha’s chief disciples Sariputta and Maudgalyayana arrived in Mongolia from India on May 30 and will be available for public veneration daily from 08:00 to 20:00, May 31–June 9, at Gandan Tegchenling Monastery in Ulaanbaatar. M. Gankhuyag, Head of Foreign Relations at the monastery, said the visit follows discussions between President U. Khurelsukh and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In Buddhist tradition, such relics—often pearl-like formations from the ashes of revered teachers, as well as tooth and bone relics—are believed to manifest through compassion and wisdom. Viewing is considered to cultivate compassion and support global peace. The event is expected to draw significant attendance during Vesak (Buddha’s Birthday) and underscores ongoing religious and cultural ties between Mongolia and India.
