Cable-Car System Set for December Service With Wind-Safety Controls
Published: 2026-10-10
Ulaanbaatar’s cable-car transit system is scheduled to begin passenger service on December 15, with testing and adjustment work continuing. Engineer M. Gersenz said the main system is designed to withstand winds of up to 21 metres per second. Wind-speed and direction sensors have been installed on three of the system’s 19 support towers. When wind reaches about 16 metres per second, or roughly 80 percent of the maximum threshold, the control room will receive an alert. Operators would then reduce operating speed from six metres per second to 1.5-2 metres per second and bring passengers safely to the two stations. Gersenz said Ulaanbaatar’s average annual wind speed is 1.5-3 metres per second.
